Mattress Q&A

How to clean a mattress?

  1. First, remove all bedding from your mattress and vacuum the top of it. Most household vacuum cleaners will have a smaller attachment that’s suitable for this task, but you may prefer a handheld vacuum for convenience. Vacuuming your mattress will help to remove dust, pet dander, and any other particles that may be present.
  2. Next, evenly scatter baking soda around the surface of your mattress, paying extra care to existing visible stains. Use a toothbrush to rub the baking soda into the stains. The baking soda will help to eliminate odors and moisture in your mattress. Please allow the baking soda to sit for at least 10 minutes, but preferably longer.
  3. Now thoroughly vacuum the mattress again, until all the baking soda is removed from the mattress.
  4. For the next step, fill a spray bottle with one part water and one part hydrogen peroxide. Spritz clear dish soap into the mixture two times. Shake well. Spray the solution over the surface of the mattress. Now cover your mattress with baking soda again, and scrub vigorously.
  5. Let the mattress sit for at least 8 hours, but preferably overnight for best results.
  6. Scrub your mattress thoroughly to loosen the residue.
  7. For the final step, vacuum the mattress thoroughly to collect the left-over baking soda residue. Please note multiple passes of vacuuming may be required to properly remove any residue.
